The Inyo NF has updated the permit availability for the Mt. Whitney main trail. The July, Aug, and Sept overnight permits are gone. But there are lots and lots of dayhikes remaining.

Seeing this I am truly perplexed as to why I didn't get the August 5th dayhike I applied for since there are still over 30 left at this time or August 4th, which has over 60. I was given July 26th, a Monday a week earlier than my vacation time which makes it useless to me. They must have been looking at someone else's request when they filled out mine. Bummer.

Dean,
try to call the office and change your date. I think it will work because you already have permit.
happy hike

>>The July, Aug, and Sept overnight permits are gone.<<

Actually, I just checked the Main Trail availability site, and there is 1 overnight still available in July, 0 in August, and a total of 52 throughout September -- all overnights. As they emphasize on the site with these figures, these are the openings for the number of *people*, not permits [assuming that one permit can be for several people].

Tomi: Thanks for the suggestion and it would probably work. I went ahead early in the week and called and was able to get a permit for the MR for the 4/5th of August. I'll turn the July 26th permit back to the availability pool so someone else can utilize that day.
