I just wanted to tell everyone here thank you for all your helpful info on hiking Mt.Whitney.I've been regularly reading the message board since I've been drawn for my overnighter June 11th-12th.I live near San Diego, hike the local hills and ride my bike often.Planning some hikes up Mt.San Jacinto,San Gorgonio, and Mt.Baldy to prepare for my trip.I've lost over 240lbs,my cardio is great, good at altitude, and I'm training like a madman.I hope I make it.Thanks again.

Rick

fish 395 ... You've ALREADY made it. Congrats on the weight loss and the training. Just take it easy and listen to your body.
Good Luck,

Rick: What you are doing is outstanding. Keep it up. Since you are doing all of those "county highpoints", (San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, Baldy), you might look into www.cohp.org and click on the map of California. I can tell you that it changed my goals and gave me a fun activity to chase after. Who knows, you might get hooked like I did. Have fun.

Hey Rick/Fish395,
I'm just thinking out loud here, but if you just lost 240lbs, you must have been quite a "mountain" yourself. I encourage you to see a physician and have a stress test before you try Whitney. The trail up Whitney is paved with the bones of overweight hikers. Best of luck! (probably should check that cholesterol while you're at it, too).

Fish,
Was that a typo or have you really lost 240 pounds? That is fantastic. May I ask what your starting weight was and what your current weight is? Was the goal of summiting Whitney what spurred you on to lose all that weight?

Thanks everyone. You're all great.I hope to run into you all sometime, somewhere.I spend a lot of time in the Eastern Sierra fishing, love the place.Plan on expanding my horizons.
Candice,I started out at 517lbs,currently 270,aiming to lose 30 more before my trip. And Dave OTM,the stress test is what opened my eyes.See a doc monthly.Cholesterol 115.

Fish,

I may be stating the obvious, but you'll likely have some snow to deal with between Trailside Meadow and Trail Camp, as well as on the switchbacks. Make sure you're ready for some postholing and some moderately exposed traverses! And congrats on losing so much weight and getting into shape!
