Are there any other decent camping locations other than Outpost Camp or Trail camp? I would prefer backpacking a distance between Outpost and Trail if possible. Could someone confirm that wilderness regulations require 100 ft distance from the trail and water when camping? (I have heard 100' and 200')

Thanks

Inyo National Forest Regs state:
The Following Acts are Prohibited in Wilderness:

Camping within 100 feet of lakes, streams or trails, terrain permitting, and never within 50 feet of lakes or streams or within 25 feet of trails

Sorry, I didn't mean to cause a problem. I post so much already, I go back now and then to delete past ones that seem to have served their purpose. In this case I answered your question, assumed you had time enough to read it, and so figured it had outlived its usefulness.

Bob, Thanks. I thought someone might have been giving you some grief for giving away some secret spot or something. Thank you for your post.

Good question. I called the ranger station, they basically said that if there level enough ground you must camp at least 100 feet away from lakes, streams, or trails. But, if you stop somewhere to camp and there is not suitable terrain to camp 100' away then 50' from lakes and streams, and 25' from trails is OK.

I recall seeing a couple of flat areas that looked like campsites on the ridge above Mirror Lake, just about where you pass the last tree.

we camped there once. pain getting water. it's kind of narrow through there, too, so you can't get much privacy.

Less then a quarter of a mile before you get to Trail Camp you pass Consultation Lake. You have to hike down to the campsites that are on a ledge about 100 feet above the water. We camped there last year, and were all alone. The only down side is that you have to walk a ways to get water; either down to the lake, back down the trail a few hundred yards, or at Trail Camp. Otherwise it's an ideal campsite. We may use it again this year.
