i just purchased a Esbit Pocket Stove, thinking that this might hold me over for a one or two nighter. Has anyone used one of these? and do they work okay at altitude?

thanx lush*

I used one on a fast packing trip and it was OK. I didn't expect it to boil water as fast as my MSR GK but it got it done. I wasn't cooking very high up - about 9k'. It does leave a residue on the pot so you might want to store it in a stuffsack or ziplock (after it cools). BTW, the fuel tabs are great to help start a fire on wet wood if you have a need and are camping in an area that allows fires. I keep a couple in my field kit at all times for this purpose alone.

We used an Esbit on our trip.

Residue on pot, too. It can be washed off but you'll have to put the pot in one of the Poop bags until you get home cause residue is kinda greasy.

1 tablet boiled a liter of water, which is perfect for deydrated food. Threw a couple in at once for a minifire to warm hands.

It's very light and when you're done you can pretty much throw everything away. It's not very ecological but we had to fly to Cali and it was questionable if they would let us on the plane with any kind of stove. I didn't want to invest in a Whisperlite + fuel bottles if I might have to leave it behind or get qualified for a strip search.
