Off topic, again, but there's a lot of good peak hikes in the Trinities. Your best bet is to get the USFS Trinity Alps Wilderness map which shows everything.
Granite Peak (8,091') in the western part has a great trail to the top, with about 4,000' gain and 5 or 6 miles each way. You can head cross-country from here and bag Red and Middle Peaks, as well.
I really loved Seven-Up Peak (8,134'), which is an easy cross-country climb from the trail starting at Swift Creek. Caribou Mountain (8,575') is another day climb doable from Big Flat trailhead.
The beautiful Canyon Creek Lakes trail, from which Thompson Peak (9,006') is bagged, is also lovely, with cascading falls and tall trees. Go as far as you wish on that one. The Forest Service does a good job of marking trails and maintaining them--it's not a category 4 (?) wilderness, by any means.
I envy you to go there now. Many local backpackers are surprised at the alpine quality and scenic beauty. From any highway, you wouldn't suspect such pristine charm exists anywhere near here. Being far north of the Sierra, it is more like the Cascades in climate and ecology.
If you're hiking solo, do leave word with someone (like the USFS rangers). I usually never see anyone else when I'm hiking there, even mid-summer on a weekend.
