You need a permit if you are going to overnight on the MR. They are enforcing a 10 permits per day limit with 6 reservable and 4 FCFS. All the reservable permits have been issued for July and August.
Arriving a day or two early and hitting the ranger station for a first-come-first-served permit might be your best bet... It worked for me Mother's Day weekend. Still, it's a gamble though...
