Maybe I missed it so forgive me if I am repeating what someone already said.I just called the ranger station, and you definitely need a bear can if you are camping in the wilderness overnight, however if you are doing a day hike, short or long, YOU DO NOT need a bear can.

You can call Mt Whitney Ranger station: (760) 876-6200 Ask for Ilene.

Thanks for the links and help. We're all set. She has her permit for entry and they said as long as she meets us that day in the Kearsarge area, there will be no problem with not having a can.

I'll be doing walk-in at Yose and she'll be doing walk-in for the exit permit at Whitney, but both rangers assured us that it wouldn't be a problem to get those for the dates we're there.
