I'm doing a dayhike up the MR this Saturday. Does anybody know if anything special is supposed to be happening up top? I can't find much information on what will be occurring other than the following web page:

<a href="http://www.lonepinefilmhistorymuseum.org/whitneyceleb.asp">Mount Whitney Trail Celebrates 100 Years!</a>

From that page it sounds like the activity will basically be in town and at the trailhead. Does anyone have any additional info?

Rick,
just curious if you are going with a group or by yourself, I might head up the MR on Saturday also. Let me know if you need any company and what time you were thinking of starting out at.

I also am surprised to see no postings after going to the summit last weekend and picking up some anniversary T-shirts on the way back. (I was even thinking about adding my own posting but you beat me to it).

Let us know if you find out anything more

While the 100th is noteworthy, with all the fusterclucking that bob r describes above it might be a good weekend to bag another peak....

At the very least they could have warned people who received permits to climb for that weekend. I'd be a bit miffed if I found out that I had a permit, but could not start between 6AM and Noon, and most of the camping spots are not available.

I think it's a great thing to celebrate, but for goodness sake, warn a person.

Geo,

I'm just by myself so far. If you (or anyone else) want to meet at the trailhead, I am planning on hitting the trail at 5:00am. Let me know if you're interested so I know whether to look for anyone.

I'm new to the site this week... making my first Whitney climb with 3 others (The main route) this Sat. and Sunday (July 17 & 18) with 1 night at Trail Camp. So I am just barely familiar with the route and area and am still learning places.

Bob R, I want to make sure I'm reading clearly. Those planning to start Sat using the main route to Trail Camp and the Summit will have to begin before 6am or after 12:00pm ?

There will be no trailhead access between 6am and noon Sat July 17 ?

I spoke with Katie at the Mt Whitney Ranger Station (760-876-6200). She stated that those with permits will have vehicle access to Portal Road this Saturday. Those without permits will not have private vehicle access and therefore have to take the shuttle in.

I feel much better :-)

Rick,
It looks like I will be heading up also and have one other person with me. We may be there at 5:00 a.m. or head out a little earlier so if you don't see us at 5:00 don't wait and have a great hike!

Thanks for the additional info. I was fuming, thinking that a hiker with a permit (me, for instance) was going to have to cool my heels in the Pizza Factory while a bunch of satchel-assed reportetrs wheezed around up at the Portal all morning. My worst fear was that they'd eat up all of Doug's burgers and fries. As it is, any shot at getting one of those primo parking spots near the trailhead is nil. But, hey, maybe I'll get my picture in the paper.

Ok Geo, thanks for the reply. Should be an interesting day. I just hope I can get a parking space within a mile of the portal.

And thanks Bob R for the event info.
