We spent a week at the Portal campground and five of the six of us summitted on July 20th. I also got to spend some time talking with Doug which I enjoyed alot. (I'm the welder from Santa Maria)
My very lengthy trip report seems a little late now but we had a great time. We were camping at the Portal during the thunderstorm of July 17 and at the Trailhead that evening we heard the most horrible stories from people on the mountain during the storm.
We spent three days on the mountain - two nights at Trail Camp. Mike helped a woman down the mountain from near the summit and gave up his tent and sleeping bag. Dan, Billy, Mike, Morgan and I had a great time fishing at Mirror Lake on our way out. We were buzzed by gliders while on the summit, 1:00pm on July 20. We got pictures and they can be seen at

My wife saw bears at the Portal campground and had fun fishing the creek. All in all, we had a great trip. Three days this year gave us more time to enjoy Mt. Whitney.
I really missed all the great information this forum has to offer. This month has been very long and I ended up reading hikers' trip reports of their PCT experiences. Also very interesting. I now hope to someday hike the John Muir Trail.
