In homage to the awe-inspiring Eastern Sierra, I propose that we have the First Annual Whitney Portal Store Haiku-athon. While many varieties of haikus exist, let us keep to the simple 5X7X5 syllable model.
Many types of haikus are possible.
The most traditional haikus depict nature, for example:
Glowing behemoths
Thrust their jagged spires upward
Piercing sapphire skies.
I like to write haikus that convey personal outdoor experiences:
Black clouds, kettle drums,
Nature decided my soup
Would be good with hail.
Then you can write ridiculous ones, but keep them about love of the Sierras and outdoors:
It's got rustic charm,
Just don't stand downwind, mind you--
Ahhh: solar toilets.
or
I need a permit.
Sorry but we're all out sir.
Damn I want to go!
Go ahead, discover your inner poet and let's celebrate all the wonderful times we've had in the backcountry!!
