On Friday (8/27) three of us did a day hike of the main Whitney Trail. Perfect weather, nice temps, no clouds. Summitted Discovery Pinnacle, Whitney, Keeler Needle, and Mt Muir. Here are the pictures 08-27-04 Whitney Main, Muir, & Keeler Needle.

Snowy,

(I see other people calling you that - I hope it isn't inappropriate.)

Can you give us some idea of the extra time required to tag the Needles and Muir on your way down?

Compared to Muir, are the Needles more or less difficult? Going 9/21 (and have a couple available spaces)

The Needles are a cake walk compared to Muir. Just easy boulder hopping. The point of Keeler is a little hairy, but that's just because it's very narrow. Crooks has more area on the summit to relax and soak in the awesome views. I'll have my pictures up soon.

Richard,

I would recommend bagging them not tagging them :^) leave the tagging to the spray paint toting gang bangers here in LA.

as far as bagging the needles and mt muir, the needles are just a little jaunt up from the trail they are all about the same as far as distance and difficulty, if you want to call it that. any reasonably adept class 2 climber can bag each one in about 15 minutes. mt muir is a little more of a challenge than the needles. first is the route, which the start is not perfectly evident, but you will know you are on the right gully, once you get started as there is a fairly good use trail going to the class 3 summit blocks. once at the summit headwall, it can get dicy but as memory serves, stay generally to the right as things get harder. there is one move i have perfected for the novices that i have helped up this route that involves a thoroughly ungraceful butt plant spin and scooch maneuver to get past the final crux of the "climb." good luck.

wyatt
