Finally … at last …The Lottery in Feb. and we got picked for 9/21; my friend and I both got picked for 9/21 - he has a group of 10 - and I have a group of 12; as of today we need a combination of 4 people to fill the numbers. We may have 3 additional openings (7 in all) – I’ll know in about 3 days after I take a final head count. We plan on starting out at 4:00 AM, Tue., 9/21/2004. Anyone interested can post here or email me at louislouistwo@hotmail.com, and I’ll send you more details.

fish395 – I hope you are not going to make me walk this time.

Side note:
I did my first Whitney summit this year on 8/7. There was a woman with a brand new backpack who sat on a boulder, got up to stretch, heard a noise, and turned around to see that a very large boulder moved and pinned her backpack to the boulder she had been sitting on. Her new backpack will now be a monument for many years. It’s just before that bit of a snow field near the summit on the main trail. I think it was a blue Kelty. I’m curious, has anyone noticed it? Is it still there?

Tony,

I was wondering about that thing when we passed it on Sunday. It sure was bizarre!

Thanks for confirming it Richard; I think a few people that I told the story to did not believe it; so I am going to use you as my back up. What are the odds?!

Saw the backpack on August 28th. That was a big rock! Snow Nymph had heard the story and passed it on to us.

I also wondered about what had happened with that backpack. Saw it August 27.

T. Air:

Yes, I still need people; yes, it is a day hike; but my permit is good for 3 days. Are you in? Tony

Oops! I goofed. I just got a call from Lone Pine Ranger Station. I forgot (though now that they mentioned it I do remember reading it in the permit info several months ago) that you are not supposed to alter anything about the permit. Anyway, she was really helpful and was able to change my 10 person 3-day permit to an 8 person day hike permit. Sorry for getting anyone's hopes up. But the good news is that frees up 2 spots that people can get by going to through the Ranger Station/Forest Service network. And my friend is going to stick to the 3 day overnight permit with his group.

Happy summits, Tony
