I see various reports where people drive around the gate, or that the lock keeps getting cut, so you can drive up as far as possible. Anyone have experiences they could share accessing Horshoe Meadows in winter and early spring.

I called the MW Ranger Station a week ago (right after the big storms) about access via Horseshoe Meadows road. I was told that the problem is not the gate or the snow, but rockslides that are blocking the road. Anyone have any current information on this or experience from past years?

A better source of information about Horseshoe Meadows road is the Inyo County Road Dept.; their Lone Pine Maintenance Yard number is 760-876-4664. They are the ones who close the gate as needed, and also schedule the rock clearing effort in the spring.

I rode my bike up the road in February a few years ago and had to turn around because of major rockfall and ice. This picture is on approximately the fourth switch back after you go around the backside for the first time and is from 2002.

Hey Calhiker....You are the man! Your picture is great and gives a perfect perspective....not a real safe plan in the winter.
