Mt. Whitney Portal Store & Hostel Forums General Mt. Whitney Portal Store Message Board Trailhead location moved?

I thought the Trailhead used to be in a different location...perhaps on the other side of the pond, closer to the creek. I last summited in '78 and I was pretty young then and didn't pay close attention.

Has the Trailhead moved since the 1970's?

Yes, the current trailhead is what used to be the pack trail. The old trailhead was at the far west end of the Portal Road. See the archives for more info.

The old Mt. whitney trail left the portal at the west end of the parking lot loop right in back of the large boulder. Now it is unmarked but still in usable condition. It comes out onto the regular trail just past the North fork River about the time you get to the wilderness sign.The trail was shorter but steep and consequently the new trail was seen as a blessing to many.
