We're headed back!!!! Just got my credit card hit for the permit fee!!! very very cool. Last year it was 4 degrees at the summit... perhaps I'll get a bit warmer weather this year. :-)

We got our letter from "Wilderness Permit Office, Inyo National Forest" in the mail post marked 3/12, must've been the first one drawn. I sent my application in the mail on Feb 1, because I couldn't connect on the fax, so it had to get there 2/3 or 2/4. My credit card was hit 2/17. We got 4 for overnight on 6/16 to 6/17. Two might back out because of the high probability of snow and ice. Two of us will probably go just as far as we can without snow and ice gear as an exploratory trip.

All four of us will be trying to get extras for later in the season, end Aug or mid Sept.

We will hike somewhere challenging this summer. This is our "radical sabatical".

Yikes!!!! just got my acceptance letter from the permit office. I'm good to go 29th June, dayhike on the main trail. Funny thing is though, my check still has not cleared the bank. So don't give up if you have not heard anything yet, there's still time.

My card finally got hit this morning. Wow, what a long wait. I also went to the INYO Natl Forest Website and found out that the Lottery is complete. They have all the days with open slots posted and dates when you can reserve them.

Got my reservation for over July 4th weekend! My first time up Whitney...with this years snowpack...what do you guys think my realistic chances of getting to the top are? Is it worth trying to get another date?

Just heard from my group leader that we will be up over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Should be a good time if we don't have an early winter. Probably doesn't matter. This will be my third summit and everybody else their first.
Can't wait!

I applied on February 1st via fax around 9 am. All the dates I requested (12 in all) still have spots available yet no credit card charges and no notification go or no go. Should I wait a little longer before I call?

Rick, did you apply for overnight or dayhike?

They were all one day trips. My climbing partner applied for a one day permit in September on 8 different dates (all have availability) and same thing, no charges and no letter.

I would definitely call -- sounds like someone was taking a coffee break and tossed your app in the wrong pile.

I called today. They don't have any record of my application. I faxed it on Feb. 1st and have a copy of the copy received from their fax. I was told to wait two weeks and then to contact them again. Apparently there are a fair number of "mistakes" in the process and if I can show them that I faxed it when I said I did and there are spaces available I don't have to wait until April to try again.

Good you called.

I didn't try this year, but last year, I sent a fax that appeared to go through. But later that morning, I got a call asking if I had faxed.

They had a record of the incoming call, but the fax machine had screwed up and was not printing the incoming messages. I faxed again, and eventually got the "Sorry you can't go" letter.

I think the bottom line is that you are probably better off using the US Mail instead of their fax number.
