Hmm, yeah, North Fork in March is not something a rookie should do...
I've been up the MR in September after a hiatus of several years. I pretty much had forgotten how hard it is ;-)
I've found that my heavy backpack was making it harder up there, in particular on the more exposed areas. So, I am now getting really lightweight gear.

Those who have been around "since the early days" have a lower number; I see that as a mark of experience, and hence would value those opinions more. Let's face it, you low number folks have been around the mountain for a while, and obviously are still going strong, since you continue to take part in this site. You have my utmost respect and I thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Well, low numbers don't mean all that much. I have been hiking at Whitney for 11 years, but only now registered at this site. I tend to go here only when I prepare for a hike, and I was looking for weather info to decide if I should go on a hike this weekend.

Did you miss the "in winter" part of the original topic title?

Bob started this topic (over three years ago, by the way!) for all the beginners who pop in with the attitude that the MR in snow is a simple "walk in the park".

I don't think that Bob's tone was negative or intimidating ... he was telling it like it is in order to avoid situations such as

This was originally posted by Bob R on 16/04/05 and should be of
interest to those planning the winter climb of the MR in April.

Are you sure that you are adequately prepared for this effort &
have enough skills to do it?

I'm not trying to be a spoil sport, but it might appear that the
group is pretty large and maybe not all are ready for this.
