In additon to all the good info on this board, here's another good source for first timers.

The Mt. Whitney Dayhike and Backpacking Page.
It's set up for newbies and those coming to the Sierra for the fist time.

Wow, lots of good info out there. Wish I had all this available before my first accent. Oh I remember, there was no Internet back then. With all the first timer questions asked on this board and others it would be great if the Ranger Station could give out these web addresses when people call or came in and on the reservation forms, of course without any endorsement, guarantee or liability. Any Rangers listening?

Icpman,
In a sense the availability of all this information is a little scary, as noted in Bob R's recent post on his concerns. We probably need to add some disclaimer that, "While the information is believed to be accurate as of the time it was posted, it is not a replacement for sound judgment. Everybody is encouraged to get additional information from reliable sources before making any decisions." At least posts on this message board are reviewed by a lot of people.

Anyhow, I am just trying to put things in perspective and am not trying to stir up a long discussion. I think that it is great that everybody takes the time to share information with others. I just hope that people are taking the time to read all the posts (including all the horror stories). That is my 2c.

Yes, I agree. Each person needs to distill down the information from books, Rangers, message boards, friends and strangers and add a heavy dose of common sense. Then as we all know, there is still a few unexpected things that are encountered. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
