We headed up the Meysan Lake trail on Saturday, May 14th. The trail is free of snow until about 9200' give or take. There is plenty of snow beyond that, but snowshoes really aren't needed if you travel early enough when the snow is firm - I'd just stick with crampons and ice axe. Even later in the morning when it softened up considerably, snowshoes would not have helped much.
There were not many tracks for us so going was a bit slow at times when the snow softened up. Our tracks should be there for you. I didn't feel the avalanche danger was very high and we didn't see any activity in 2+ days up there. However if the warm weather keep ups it's bound to come down.
We camped at Grass Lake 10,700' or so. When I awoke at sunrise Sunday morning it was right about 32-33 degrees , a very pleasant evening. We originally planned to climb Irvine but instead attempted Candlelight Peak Sunday morning and headed down to meet some friends on the Whitney trail. We spent Sunday night at Bighorn Park after a trip up to Trail Camp. A storm came in Sunday night and the wind was howling but the temperature didn't get below freezing.
You can check out pictures from the trip here. Have a good time, it's beautiful up there and you will probably have the entire canyon to yourself.
