Hello everyone,

I am looking for a kindly soul with an extra space on his or her permit for a friendly Washington climber for the dates of June 11, 12, and 13. My brother is through-hiking the PCT, and he will be in the Whitney area for these dates. My plan is to fly down and meet him to climb the East Buttress or another rock route, but of course all overnight permits are taken. I couldn't reserve one ahead of time because I had to wait and see when he would be in the area first! His PCT permit covers him (I think), but I am still in need. I hope to fly down from Seattle on June 10, then hike and climb for the next three or four days. I would be ever so grateful for an opening. I could make it up to you when you come to climb or hike in North Cascades National Park...I work on a small organic farm just south of Highway 20, which runs through the middle of the park. Come crash at my place for a night. Well, thanks for considering it!

What about other entry points?
If you go up the moutain route,
do you still need a permit?
Isn't there a back way in?
Longer walk but no permit line-up.

I guess I don't know about other entry points. The impression I got from the ranger at Lone Pine was that if I am planning on climbing Whitney, then I need a permit no matter which route or trail I take. If anybody knows something different, I'm all ears.

If you are staying overnight in the backcountry you do need a permit no matter where you go. There are two different permits for that area. A Whitney Main Trail permit, which sold out eons ago, and a permit for the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek. For that climb most would use the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek. The reservable spots are all taken for your dates, but they hold 40% for walk in only, which can be picked up the day prior to your trip. It's still a crap shoot with no guarantees, but if you get to the ranger station early on Friday the 10th, you have a good shot.
