All:

I am hoping to summit Whitney via the Meysan Lake Trail this July 4th and after searching the forum for information, I have a few questions:

1. I know things are warming up and the snow/ice is melting, but what is the likelihood that I will need crampons/ice ax during this time frame?

2. How difficult is the route finding from Meysan to Sky Blue and beyond?

Note: I am planning on taking my time on this journey and will stay the first night at Meysan, the second night at Sky Blue, hit Whitney, and then hike back down the Main Trail, or stay a third night at Trail Crest.

Thanks in advance everyone.

What you are attempting is not for the faint of heart. The best explaination is found in route 7 of Paul Richins book Mount Whitney The Complete Traihead to Summit Hiking Guide.

Getting to Meysan Lake is relatively straight forward.

From Meysan Lake you will need to climb over the LeConte Mallory Saddle or the Mallory Irvine saddle.

You can see the two chutes in this photo, taken from Lone Pine peak in late April 2005

They will likely still be full of snow that early in July.

Once over either pass it is gradual and easy down to Sky Blue lake. In this Irvine photo album there are some pictures on page 2 coming up from Sky Blue Lake to the Mallory Irvine Saddle.

From Sky blue lake over Crabtree pass and up the dreaded sandhill is a real challenge..

Do a search for "Crabtree pass" above where it said "search" and read the 3-4 reports from June - September 2004. The one from September is a report of someone who did what you are going to do.

Take a look at these pictures, especially pages 3-5. We came in through the Miter basin but the pictures from Sky Blue lake up to Discovery pinnacle could be usefull.

Thanks for the info. it was helpful. I have the Paul Richins book, but I've heard this route is not well described and was hoping for some clarification.
