jclark- Whitney easily qualifies as high altitude mountaineering. The Alps, where Alpine climbing got started, have few mountains much taller than Whitney. More to the point, people have died from HACE and HAPE at and even below 14,000 feet. As for glissading not being dangerous, one person already died on Whitney this year glissading. Many people break ankles glissading every year, which is a big deal when you are several hours hiking/climbing time from the base of the mountain. Obviously Whitney can be climbed safely by people with minimal skill or experience and is done so every day in the summer, but you shouldn't trivialize the risks.

I need to join in with Sierra Sam. Glissading is way too popular. Check with the Alpine accident reports and see how many times the word "glissade" is related to an injury. Lots....

People who have trained on how to glissade and do so under the proper conditions, can usually safely glissade. However change the conditions (which can even happen mid-slide) and the "semi-controlled slide" becomes an out of control slide and injury results.

So to some under the right conditions, it may be "not dangerous", but that doesn't mean it will be 1 day or even 1 hour later in the same place. Glissading is dangerous, approach it as such.

And if things go well on your slide, great, enjoy it but don't down play the danger.
