Does anyone ever hike up the chute when there is no snow and ice. Is it shorter but steeper? I have never been there. I will be there on July 25th.

You Certainly could, but I don't think you would want to. That is a steep rocky and loose scree field in the summer. It would be brutal up or down when dry.

The trail up the switchbacks is a blessing really. I suspect if you used an alternative route in that area, you wouldn't do it a second time.
