Several of us here use SmugMug (www.smugmug.com).
It's not free; but for the minimal annual cost, it's well worth it. At the very least, they differ from most sites in that your site usage is not measured on the number of pictures you upload, but rather by the amount of traffic your site gets. Thus, you can upload virtually as much as you want, and the usage limits are very generous, I think. There are also 3 levels of paid membership, with the two upper levels allowing you increasing amounts of customization of your site, as well as higher usage limits, too. Their customer service is second to none, and is VERY responsive, and they try to make their site what their customers want as much as possible. Their online FAQ should answer any questions you have about the site. If you end up wanting to use this hosting site, let me know, and I can give you some info that will give you a small initial discount off of your first year's membership fee, at whatever level that may end up being. If you want to look at my site on SmugMug, it's california-trailwalker.smugmug.com. For an example of a more customized site using SmugMug, Richard P's SmugMug site is at piotrowski.smugmug.com.
