This will be my first time to hike Mt. Whitney, and I'm really excited! I'm going with two other people who have hiked it numerous times. Any time during September will do! Thanks for all your help.

please call the Wilderness Permit office periodically and see if there are any cancellations.

I'm solo and interested in joining experienced hikers who are going to be overnight on Whitney. Any chance I could join your group let me know. I do not have overnight permit however. Thanks!

Peggy, I am going up with a couple of others on Saturday. If that works for you, suggest you show up at the ranger station--perhaps at 9 or 9:30. There will likely be a cancellation and you can pick up a permit. You are welcome to hike with us. Our plan is to summit Whitney on Sunday, then climb Muir on the way down, and get back to the Portal in time for burgers.

If no cancellations, wait until 11:00 when the no-shows are declared. Then get your permit, and meet us at Trail Camp for the night.

If this interests you, contact me at rockwellb at gmail dot com, and we can firm up the details--times, etc., and how we can recognize each other.

Thanks all. I will touch base with Bob directly. I can definitely do this weekend and come up a few days early to acclimate but if I come in early, assume I can get a permit, I still need a buddy to to get me to Horseshoe and I can't be up there by myself.

Bob: I sent you an email at your address above and it bounced back to me. Hmmm.

Peggy, all you need at horseshoe meadows is a mattress pad or cot, a sleeping bag, and an ice chest with food. How difficult is that?

You can get all of what you need at the nearest REI.

It looks like you have a second volunteer to help you make it to the top. If you are willing to take the time to acclimate and make the effort, you will succeed. Good luck!
