I was thinking about hiking Mt. Fuji next summer. Has anyone out there hiked this mountain and how does it compare to Whitney. I completed the Whitney day hike in July and finished in 16 hours.

Thanks
Randall

So you think there's a lot of traffic on Whitney??
Here's a typical summer day at the summit of Fuji:

To think that this is only the line for the solar toilet! We need to send a shipment of WAG bags over there! The Portal Store could make a lot of profit over there! Do you think they are dayhikers or overnighters? Where are the bear canisters?

Journey well...

When I was 9 and 10 years old my Father(while in the Army) took me up Mt. Fuji. It took 2 days to summit. In 1959 and 1960 the mountain had 10 rest stops or small huts along the way. We purchased wooden walking sticks that were branded at each of these huts or stations, so we could prove we made it that far. I have my two "Fuji Sticks" with all the brands to the top. I understand that now you can drive to the 5th station to start your hike(around 7,000 ft).

The second picture is only a small fraction of the people that go there. I crawled up Mt.Fuji in August it took me 8.0 hours to get to the area to view the sunrise. The summit is another 1/2 hour or 45 minutes past this. This is a very easy hike except for the scree, the problem is the hordes of people. Once you near the last couple of miles, you literally take two or three steps and wait a minute or two for the people to move. I started at 8:00 PM and arrived around 4:00 AM. The distance and altitude is equivalent to hiking to trail camp. I did four, day hikes this summer, and here were my times to the top.
Half Dome up the mist trail 4.25 hrs.
Mt Shasta Bunny Camp to Summit 10.45
Mt. Fuji (view sunrise, not summit) 8.25
I have hiked to the top of Mt. Whitney 8.30 just got back last weekend from Whitney was not feeling good and tuned around at the cables after 5 hours. If you need more info for Fuji let me know.

While the picture doesn't show it, you will see 70+ year old people in sandles hiking to the top of Mt Fuji. It is quite easy. It is often also poor visibility there from all of the polution, but the views are amazing on the clear days.

Thanks for the photo. Last year a friend summited Fuji and found vending machines! I was planning to do Fuji next year but somehow it lost its allure.
