Here is the first of 3 pictures on Sept 17 when the helicopter arrived to remove the toilet. I actually did not take a picture of it dangling on the wire, but should have. Harvey (PS double click to enlarge)

pic 3. Was a great greeting (for a flying buff) to come over the edge from the MR and hear the rotor chop.

Harvey,
When you climbed the MR on the 17th how was the descent? Did you go down the MR or the trail? I read your earlier account of the conditions and am getting ready to head up there. Just wondering about the descent. Thanks in advance.

I went up and down the MR. Had seriously considered going down the Main Trail to save my twice - surgerized knees. I had gone down that way 10 years ago. But I was advised that the longer miles and the faster pace of the easier Main Trail would actually pound my knees worse. So I came down the MR and was amazed at how good my knees felt. My 55 yo quads and calves were sore the next day, but the knees did not hurt or swell at all like they have on other fast paced long descents like, say, Half Dome. So despite the twisting and turning on the steeper MR, it really was the best for me. Good luck.

What? No more "highest toilet" in the lower 48? The tragedy of it all!

Reminds me of Havasupai, probably saw that image about 10-15 times of flying toilets overhead. Sure didn't like looking at those things flying anywhere near me overhead.

Tribute to the late great Mt.Whitney Commode. For the benefit of those who never saw it, here it is in '03. I didn't actually use it but I could have. There was a low rock privacy wall between it and the summit hut. I checked it last year. Apparently some non-thinking people used it to deposit wag bags. Exactly why was it removed?

+ @ti2d-- I think the highest toilet actually goes to Longs Peak where if I recall correctly, they had summit toilets up at the Boulder field at 13000 ft. That puts it as quite a bit higher than trail camp and therefore was the highest toilets regardless of what Whitney had. http://www.komar.org/faq/longs-peak/boulder-field/

In lieu of the solar toilet at Trail Camp being closed and now the Whitney summit facilities being removed.
I propose we initiate a new system of identifying privacy. Something that could be held up, or out in such a fashion that would allow others not to stumble into out private moments. A flag on the end of an ultra-light carbon pole could be held up so that others could slow their pace or possibly take that opportunity to 'wave their flags' That's it "Wag Flags". Color specific to identify the various forms private necessity
But wait there's more...
Included in the kit you get one pole with built in paper holder, several flags and a bag that's good for 15 days ('tsgotta be pretty ripe on the third...). Act now and we'll throw in a bell for the ocularly impaired.

Here's a pic of the summit toilet with four walls (but no roof or door). Looking at it now, maybe this one was removed long ago. (Pic taken in 1978.)

Force Infinity, I disagree. The pic from Mtntrailrunner validates that. I, too, have "sat" on that "highest pit 14er" and have a picture but me too dum-bah to know how to post it!
Journey well...

ForceInfinity.
+ @ti2d is correct. the 13,000 Longs Peak one is "pit-iful" at such low altitude, the toilet we are talking about here was on the summit 14,495, not the one at Trail Camp. Now that it is gone, maybe Longs is the highest???
Maltilda, you still out here?

And with that I proclaim Long's Peak as the highest in the lower 48! Does it also have a bidet?

Absolutely absorbing.
This thread, I mean. Obviously not the summit, now that it is entirely granite......
