I think that most of these small storms passing thru aren't accumulating any snow at the lower elevations, but am wondering whether anybody has heard any news as far as road closures up to Horseshoe Meadows, Onion Valley, South Lake, etc.
I think I read that Tioga has already closed?

It was closed for a time last week, but I just called in, and today: (Monday, Oct 9, 2006, 10 am) all roads in Yosemite, including Tioga Pass are open! The yosemite web site says to call -- it is too sketchy to post on the web, since it depends on the hour-by-hour weather.
The Yosemite web site is here: Yosemite: Current road conditions. The road conditions number is: 209/372-0200 (press 1 then 1) .

As of this morning at 9:00 am. Onion Valley was open with a suprising temp of 53.2 degrees; winds where light @ 10 mph out of the NW.

while up at onion valley yesterday - got a report from some guys who were doing photography - they reported being up in bishop area the day previous - they reported driving to south lake and knowing the north lake road was open as well.

We had an inch or so of rain in Big Pine Friday night. Road to Glacier is wide open with only trace snow at the roads end. Snow levels (trace amounts were down to about 8000' there and on the road to S. Lake). BTW, fall color was nice up near Glacier Lodge site.

Was in Touloume Meadows yesterday and Tioga was open, no snow accumulation. The fall colors in June Lake have hit their peak, fantastic!
Morning temps at 6:00 at the Cathedral lakes trailhead in Yosemite were 27 degrees and breezy.

Horseshoe Meadow Road was closed this a.m. The gate was not locked and it may re-open soon.

looking out my window at work - Langley is now notable with its "white cap" - if the gate remains unlocked through the weekend you can count on extra time to summit for snow conditions. Horseshoe Meadow road conditions should be checked daily or call to verify planned closure date - you can bet it will be soon.

I called Lone Pine today and got a report that the road to Horseshoe Meadows (Cottonwood Lakes) was closed today, likely for the winter.

Scott, the drive up the Big Pine Creek canyon was very beautiful.
I was happy to see that they plowed the South Lake Road as it was so icy on Wednesday morning that I didn't think I'd be able to drive down. I went on a hike up towards Bishop Pass and when I returned in the afternoon, the road was clear and had a nice gravel dusting to aid traction.
Whitney Portal Road had ice up at the Portal and the overnight parking areas were still coated in snow on Thursday afternoon.

Drifts up to 2 feet.
Snowshoes would have been a useful thing on the hike. It took me 3 1/2 hours to get to the base of the pass. With the energy that I was expending, I figured it would be another hour, or more, to the top without them.

Richard, Thank you..I was hoping you would have said a lot less than 2 feet!! I sure wish the snows would have waited at least untill November!..I bet it was quite beautiful there. Tahoe got snow two weeks ago about 6" and then these last few storms the snow level was quite high around 10K Thank you again

A few pictures here shot on October 14th and 15th. Might give you a little idea of snow and fall color around Big Pine and Glacier trailheads.

Richard - I backpacked Kearsarge Pass during the storm on October 17/18 and the road is still fine. I had snow accumulated on my truck at the trailhead but the trail is still visible if you are accustomed to winter hiking. The afternoon of the 18th was like a beautiful series of Sierra postcards.
