My son and I are doing a two day hike of Whitney in late August. Coming from Philly, we'd like to fly light so we want to ship our equipment (tent, sleeping bags, packs, etc). I did a little research and found I could ship a large box (35 lbs) to Lone Pine via USPS for about $38 one way. I assume I can ship it to the motel (not yet selected).

I searched the board but came up empty. I'm looking for any hints, pitfalls, etc from those who've done this.

Hi Not sure if UPS is cheaper but post office is closed weekends and opens 9-5 ,Check with motels some have stopped holding packages.
We will store packages at the store conditions must include a throw-away date and no food items unless packed in hard shell sealed containers. Shipping address: UPS

Whitney Portal Store
13 miles west of Lone Pine
Lone Pine Ca. 93545

Post Office, we check the mail at least once a month in the summer . Thanks Doug

Thanks Doug, that's very kind of you. I'll try to spare you that duty. I'll discuss this with whatever motel I choose. I did check UPS but the good ole US Postal Service came in cheapest. Cliff Clavin would be proud.

I shipped street clothes and stuff for the end of my JMT trip in 2004 to the motel I was staying at in Lone Pine; worked great. Do remember that fuel canisters, fuel bottles (even empty), and stuff like that can't get put on an airplane, although most post offices *will* ship it; they just put a sticker on it saying it can't go on a plane.

Fed Ex Ground would ship 35 pounds from Geno's (Zip 19147) to Lone Pine for $29.13.

Damn, I never went to Pat's or Geno's unless I was three sheets to the wind and/or it after 2 AM. I ain't a big fan of either.

The Krimpets I can get, the cheese steak I can get but the Rita's that's another story entirely. :~(.
