I just recieved my confirmation for August 22. I normally camp at the portal a couple of days in advance. I just checked and it's all booked. I need to acclimatize. I was thinking of staying the night in Lone Pine and hiking around Horseshoe Meadow during the day. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have stayed in Lone Pine and hiked around Horseshoe Meadows. It is a fine plan in my book. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to the Portal in the AM. Don't worry about any commuter traffic.

You could also show up early and see if any FCFS sites are available at the Portal. You also could camp at a Cottonwood campground in Horseshoe Meadow or at Onion Valley.

For the last three years I have stayed at Lone Pine Campground and then spend the entire day before my dayhike at Horseshoe Meadows. I think this year I'll spend the day near Onion Valley just to be different.
