I seem to always get more passes than I need. Last year we had 12 overnighters, 11 people went. And this year I wasn't sure about going but got 12 again! It looks like we will have 4-6 people going, this time June 23-24.

A couple of questions where I could use some input:
-I'm fine with just letting go of the other passes when I pick up, but our group is thinking of changing plans to go up on a one day but start at like 3am on Sunday. Does anyone know how they will handle a group going for a one day with overnight passes? What would a ranger do if he checked on us? or Does it matter?
-This will be my third time going up. I learned from last time, that overnight isn't necessarily as good as it may seem for acclimitization against the added load to carry, and this group will probably do better with a one day. If there is a way to pass on my remaining spots, you can follow this post up and let me know if you need them.

Looking forward,
regards, Jim

An overnight pass is fine for a dayhike. Just be sure to check in (telephone is ok) by noon the day before the hike.

Edit... But just now I notice you are dayhiking on the day AFTER your overnight entry date. THAT will probably cause a problem, since in the permit system, the ENTRY DATE is the key. You should call the ranger station. Good luck.

As for letting your unused permits go, be nice to everyone else, and call in as soon as possible and release them so others might reserve one.

Here is another recent thread on releasing unused permits:
Solicitation for Mt. Whitney Summit Trip partners

Thanks for the input. I've been a bit paranoid about the attitude with the passes in general, feeling like the admin on the whole thing is just too uptight. I intend to call sometime this week once the count is final for our group.

We actually are shooting for an afternoon 'tune-up' the day before at White Mountain.

regards, Jim

Last year we had overnight passes and when we went in to pick them up, we just told them and they changed our overnights to day passes. They were very nice about it.

Maybe let me know if you are going to return any of your overnight passes, I was trying to get two for the weekend of June 23-24! Have fun!
