I'm not sure but hang gliding from Mt. Whitney may be like a sick bird........ill eagle.

I'm a little late to this party (this post from Bob K. is a year and a half old!) but I had to respond. Yes, hang gliders have sailed off the summit of Whitney before.

June 1976 was the first time I went to Whitney. While eating lunch on the flat rock in Trailside Meadow,we saw a hiker labor past us with a load that caught our eyes. Strapped to the outside of his external frame backpack were poles inside a nylon bag (the length was probably 10 feet.) We had no idea what it was for - surveying equipment? A very big tent? Another hiker informed us what was up - he was carrying a hang glider, and planning to take off at the summit.

The next day, when I was approaching the summit, I saw the guy walking back. He looked forlorn. Other folks on the top of the summit said he was a bit worried about the high winds. Probably one of the smartest choices he made.

I understand that they used to play baseball on top of Half Dome.

Takes a lot of balls!

This one allows you a way to collect the golf ball (water soluable or otherwise) from waters below Whitney. And perhaps enjoy a ride down the mountain during the spring thaw/slush smile

Photographed while going backwards over one of the rapids in the Alabama Hills rock garden. See photo at top of page at following link.

One of these days I will actually read the instructions to see how to post a photo directly. There is a new waterslide for an easy way down smile
