This is right up my alley. I have written over 75 songs; I write the lyrics and melodies at the same time in my shower!!! I have just recorded my first 4 demos (a feat in itself). The following is one I may record this summer. The lyrics would work for your Whitney pics on dvd; oh well...next time! Maybe a song by U2 would work...
THE MOUNTAIN TOP Lyrics and Melody by Mary Clare Reinhardt Chorus Let’s go to the mountain top and get away, why should we stop. We’ll climb the highest peak. (quick guitar riff) Leave the city far behind, find some calm and peace of mind. A true heart is what we seek. Verse 1 Sometimes this life gets hectic, responsibilities. The world just keeps on spinning; it brings us to our knees. Let’s throw our cares and woes away, then set our minds at ease. Come on. We’ll have some fun. We will shine in the sun. (guitar riff) Chorus Verse 2 We’ll trust our intuition, listen to our heart. Keep things in perspective, try to play it smart. It’s time to re-evaluate and make a fresh new start. Come on. We’ve just begun. We will shine in the sun. (guitar riff) Chorus Verse 3 And so we’ll journey lightly. It’s the way to go. Take the road less traveled. Forging high and low. Just find a peak to challenge us, let the north wind blow. Come on. We’re not yet done. We will shine in the sun. (guitar riff) Chorus Ending (several keys higher) Let’s go to the mountain top and get away, why should we stop. We’ll climb the highest peak. Whoa oh ooh whoa. Leave the city far behind, find some calm and peace of mind. A true heart is what we seek. Whoa oh ooh whoa ooh oh.

For my pics, I used "Walking on the Moon" by The Police.

Depends on your tastes, I guess. I've been looking for some music for later this summer, and it's pretty much all over the board. "Top of the World"--Van Halen "The Ecstasy of Gold (Theme from Bonanza!)"--Metallica "Fanfare for the Common Man"--OK, just blanked on composer, that's just sad... Anything by George Winston on piano or Mannheim Steamroller "Ride"--Trace Adkins Have fun with this one! -L

For the best results, I think you should put the photo-story together first, at least to see how the flow goes. Then watch it and see what comes to mind, maybe browsing your mp3's or CD collection (or looking at the suggestions in this thread) to get ideas. It's better if you don't just have one song repeat for 200 pics, if you're using songs with lyrics at least.
Variety is good; it can change the mood and keep people from getting tired of watching. Just as one example, for a Half Dome trip, while the photos were at the summit I used Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky", which gave a nice feeling of the magnitude of it all, and as the descent began it changed to some very mellow Irish music "Wild Mountain Thyme". On the way up, it had been Credence Clearwater's "Have you ever seen the Rain" (for the mist trail, I know, it's not really talking about rain, but it worked nevertheless 8^), followed by some American Indian music from Hans Mayer's "Native Spirit", to Bob Marley's "I can see clearly now" as we got up higher.
Obviously you'll tailor what you use to your show and tastes, but those are just examples of using variety and setting moods for different parts of the show. Have fun!
You don't mention what software you are using; if you find you're getting frustrated with what you're using, either from lack of options, usability, or quality, try downloading a free working trial of Proshow Gold from Photodex. I've used several over the years and found all of them lacking something, until I found Proshow Gold, which does virtually everything and does it right.

Depends on the mood you want to portray:
Whimsical and just a little sentimental: Somewhere Over the Rainbow, by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (check it out on itunes)
Playful: Better Together, by Jack Johnson
Reflective, like you might sit back and enjoy on a cold winter's evening, thinking back about the good times you've had with friends: Canon in D, by Pachabel (there are a lot of versions, I prefer one with a simple, lilting piano).

MT,
"Fanfare for the Common Man" is by Aaron Copland, if I'm not mistaken. It'd be a great piece for when the summit is reached.
To respond further to 2dtrail's request, I'd use, among others:
3rd movement of Rachmaninoff's second symphony (a most beautiful piece), as well as the second movement of his first piano concerto (also very beautiful). Throw in the majestic overtures to either/both "Die Meistersinger" and/or "Tannhauser" by Wagner. For lilting piano, the music during the opening 2-3 minutes of "On Golden Pond" comes to mind. I'll continue to add to this as I think of more.

Thanks, CaT!! WHat a brain-faht! If the slide show is long enough, Copeland's "Appalachian Spring" would be a wonderful soundtrack as well!

MT,
See my further edits above. We must be thinking alike. I was also thinking of Appalachian Spring -- one of my favorites. It would work too.
Forgot to mention that my college degree is in music.

Well, last year on the last section I couldn't get The Carpenters out of my head - "Top Of The World". While on the way down I was humming Flogging Molly - "... and I'll never see the likes of you again..." (song about New Years but I liked the line)
But of course I am going up one more time this Saturday so maybe the internal jukebox will be different. "My Way", anyone? "Reach For The Sky"
