I have been ask to do a measurable rainfall anaylsis for the Town of Independence. This measurement was recorded at the EPA Site in Fort Independence using EPA approved and calibrated equipment. An EPA approved QAPP was in place. The timeframes for the analysis are:

October 2006 thru April 2007;

Oct 06 - 0.02 in
Nov 06 - 0.00 in
Dec 06 - 0.06 in

Jan 07 - 0.47 in
Feb 07 - 0.37 in
Mar 07 - 0.01 in
Apr 07 - 0.15 in

TOTAL for the Season: 1.08 in

Average measurable rainfall for the Season = 5.0 / 6.0 in

Cheez, talk about your rain shadow! Dennis, can you tell me if the "typical" Sierra thunderstorm bunches up against the ranges or do they "spread out"? I realize all the variables involved here.

Thanks,
L cool

Very similar to the situation we're having in Southern Maryland. I have not had measurable rain at my house since May. My son calls our yard "crispy," which is the best way one could describe it. We have the occasional scattered thunderstorm, but they always seem to scatter away from my house.

Those numbers pretty much mimic the sad total rainfall amounts that the State of California received this year. In L.A. we received 3.21 inches for the July 1, 2006-June 30, 2007 rainfall year. (lowest ever recorded since they started keeping records in 1880) Normal is usually around 15.03 inches. (we got 21.35% of normal this year) It looks like Independence received about 19.6% of normal. I guess all we can say is "wait until next year!" (hopefully) frown

Qulifying this by saying that I do believe that Global Warming is a problem that we realy need to solve:

An average is an average (And didn't we just recently have near record amounts of rainfall?) and I don't think the people who track these numbers throw out the High and Low like they do in Ice Skating and other sports. Does anybody have a link (or better yet, post it here) to a graph that shows a trend line for rainfall over the years? It would be interesting to see whether the long-term trend is downward sloping (unlike the temp chart that shows an upward sloping trend).

Good point Sierra Snail.

And about global warming...

How many years of data is available for any "long-term" trend analysis? Uh,... 2007 - 1880 = 127 years and we guess the earth is HOW old? Seems to me one can NOT outrule the possibility of much greater and more telling cycles.

Just a thought.

This is a quote from the CA Dept. of Water Resources "The National Weather Service records annual rainfall from July 1 to June 30. Having just completed the 2006-2007 year, most of California had significantly below-normal precipitation." Here is the link: Dept. of Water Resources

You are correct with your thinking. Back in the 70's the scientist (in the know) were calling for global cooling and wanted to spread ashes on the polar ice caps to help warm the earth. The challenge we all have is what is the cause for the warming. Is this just another cycle in the many cycles of the earth cooling and warming? We simple humans look at 125 years worth of data and think we have all the answers. Lastly, 125 years ago people were not smart enough to build toilets inside the house with proper plumbing but we are supposed to believe they were smart enough to provide accurate temperture data.

Just remember, Mammoth set a record for snowfall for the 2006 ski season. There is no such thing as normal weather, only average and average also includes dry winters as well as exceptionally wet ones too. Get ready for a great ski season next winter..........

I'm with you! Good positive thinking. Every Oct., I change my answering machine to record: It's that time of year. What time? Time to think snow!

I am beginning to believe the guys that are blaming the bovines for all that methane.I say eat chicken, and drink mother's milk.

Hey do you think the dinosuars caused their own extinction by being methane producers too! Hmmmm!
