We asked one of the Sequoia backcountry rangers about this. We were told that the wag bags are only required for those exiting via Whitney Portal. So they wouldn't be required for those starting the JMT from Whitney Portal. Those ending the JMT there would pick one up in the box at Crabtree Meadow.

So those starting the JMT from the Portal still dig a hole. (Hope Inyo rangers agree .) Interesting - I guess a few landmines are worse than many landmines. I haven't been to Crabtree in a couple years but glad to hear there's wag bags there - hopefully on the trail after the various trails from the PCT merge and not at the ranger station.

We got our permit at Lone Pine to enter via Cottonwood Lakes and entered the Whitney Zone from the south (Discovery Pass). We were not going to the portal. We were offered wag bags, but were told they were not required for us. The ranger did, however, suggest that we "put a plug in it" while in the Whitney Zone, hopefully she was joking. smile

That's what I said too!
Another Wag Bag Post...

But, why not have the vendor just stamp a sequential number on each one. At permit pickup, those numbers are recorded and linked to permit.

Unfortunately, there are a number of ways around this such as supplying your own wag bags, or simply not using them...

I have one better. Self-addressed postage paid WAG Bags! Leave them on the trail and they get mailed back to you. smile

Talk about junk mail.
