We got our permit at Lone Pine to enter via Cottonwood Lakes and entered the Whitney Zone from the south (Discovery Pass). We were not going to the portal. We were offered wag bags, but were told they were not required for us. The ranger did, however, suggest that we "put a plug in it" while in the Whitney Zone, hopefully she was joking. Steve

At permit pickup, those numbers are recorded and linked to permit. Unfortunately, there are a number of ways around this such as supplying your own wag bags, or simply not using them...
