So those starting the JMT from the Portal still dig a hole. (Hope Inyo rangers agree - I find they are much more domineering than the NPS - probably because of the crowds they deal with.) Interesting - I guess a few landmines are worse than many landmines. I haven't been to Crabtree in a couple years but glad to hear there's wag bags there - hopefully on the trail after the various trails from the PCT merge and not at the ranger station.
We got our permit at Lone Pine to enter via Cottonwood Lakes and entered the Whitney Zone from the south (Discovery Pass). We were not going to the portal. We were offered wag bags, but were told they were not required for us. The ranger did, however, suggest that we "put a plug in it" while in the Whitney Zone, hopefully she was joking.
