I will be in the Bishop Creek area on the 5 - 7 Oct. to do some fishing, but I would like to go on a day hike on Saturday. Having not been up to that area, any good suggestions are very welcome. Thanks in advance.

The hike to Bishop Pass out of South Lake is a great day hike. So are hikes into basins out of the Sabrina trailhead. North Lake is the jump of point for the Lamarck lakes and Piute Pass. At North Lake, you have to park your car next to the pack station, which adds a half mile more to the hikes. Any of these hikes are beautiful and rewarding.

Gary,

Plus, the alpine fishing is great this time of year.I may even be up there the same time as you.Take a fishing pole with you.One of my favorites out of South Lake head to Bishop Pass.Stop and fish the inlet to South Lake for Browns, then head up trail and fish any number of lakes on either side of the trail. You can bag either Hurd or Chocolate Peaks if you feel the need or the bigger peaks a little farther up.Trout season ends Nov.15th so get up there while you can and also enjoy the fall colors in Bishop Canyon.Have fun.

I was there early this month, and did two short hikes one day. In the morning I went from Sabrina to Blue Lake, in the afternoon went from South Lake to Long Lake. I liked Blue Lake a little better, perhaps because there were fewer people. It's an incredible sight when it finally comes into view from the trail.
No matter which trailhead you choose, there are plenty of lakes to explore.

DonR,

There are several ways to get there from the trail. You can follow where others have gone thru on lightly traveled "trails" or just make your own.South Lake is real low and I think the rear part of the lake is now seperated from the main part secluding it even more. The higher lakes looked pretty close to normal last time I was up there.

Thanks for all the info guys! We ended up condo camping when someone offered up their condo in Mammoth. It was tough to rough it like that, but we managed. 4" of fresh in Mammoth over Friday night and one fat bear trying to get into the trash with no luck.

Fishing on the upper Owens River was great! Beautiful weather and awesome views all the way around the valley.

Thanks again for the options, but as with any trip, you just might not end up where you started for.

Gary
