I hiked the Whitney trail to Trail Crest on October 8th.On the way back, I lost my GPS unit. It is a Garmin Magellan unit and most likely I lost it near the Mirror Lake. If anyone finds it, can you call me at 408-221-0982. I will be more than happy to pay for shipping and handling.

Thanks.

While I hope you get your unit back, I must add, there is something incrdibly ironic about a lost GPS. By the way, I hear the USFS in their never ending quest to "return" wilderness to a wilderness state will be banning GPS for use outback in the future.

Can you provide a source reference for your USFS claim about banning GPS units?

Banning GPS in the wilderness? Only reason I could see would include banning all electronic devices, and IIRC the law bans motor-driven equipment, with an exception for small motor-driven equipment like (old film) cameras.

Now, maybe the proposal is to ban geocaches. Some jurisdictions consider these to be abandoned personal property and therefore remove them. Whatever...

AsABat is correct -- there has been talk of a ban on geocaching. Of course no one is talking about banning GPS receivers!

See the page Geocaching on Federal Lands for additional information.

I think PtMcG's tongue was firmly in cheek for this one. But all electronic devices? That would be something, no digital cameras or even film models with any electronics...hope you kept that old Brownie and some flashbulbs 8^). No cell phones of course, no more worry about using ipods etc., or walkie-talkies, and no watches unless it's an old windup one. Be sure to leave your car's remote or key behind, and of course, no pacemakers...8^)

Back to the water filter for Steri-pen users, and those electric socks...well, they'd better have just an off-on switch.
