Hi All,
There have been a couple of good discussion threads about crampons and I have learned quite a bit from the group.

As we approach the winter season, I would like to ask for opinions and experiences with various brands of snowshoes. Any opinions on the MSR Lightning Ascent shoes? Any folks have preferences and/or experiences with other brands?

Thanks!
Adam

My group has a bunch of snowshoes between us including MSR Denali, Lightning, Atlas and Tubbs. I own the a pair of mid priced 10 year old Tubbs, which I like everything about but the bindings.

If I were buying today the Lightnings would be the near the top of my list. I would look for bindings that offer easy ons and offs, since winter is time of many gear changes during the hiking day. The limiting factor in buying these to me here is price...they are just a bit spendy for something I will use a few times a year on average.

The few times we've used snow shoes locally they were rented from I believe REI. Gives you an opportunity to try a few brands before spending the $$$.

Haven't had too many chances to actually try my MSR Denali EVO Ascents yet, looking forward (I hope) to this winter.
But the little I did get to use them, I really liked them, both with and without the extra tail section.

A16 also rents snowshoes, which is always a great 'try b4 u buy' deal.

"Lightning ascents" have great traction and have a heel lift -- it saves your calves a bit. But a bit heavier. The "Lightning" is MSR's lightest, and I'm sure it has enough traction for most purposes (I think it's 1 lb lighter!). Taking weight off your feet makes a huge difference.

I'd also suggest going with the smallest size available, for most people and most Whitney trips.

Thanks all. I appreciate the tips. I am considering the Lightning Ascents and will try them plus MSR Denali.
I hope we get a decent snow pack this winter.
