This is the Numero Uno Whitney Clinic in SoCal. If you are any sort of newbie, that including Whitney, the Eastern Sierra, the MR or the Inyo NF, get your butt to this clinic.

Kurt does an outstanding job of laying it all out for you.

IMHO, A-16 does a much better job with this type of thing than REI.

Talked to Kurt a little while ago. He's packing for an Africa trip he's guiding to Kilimanjaro so he's not in the internet much at the moment. He leaves in a couple days.

Fyi, he said there won't be a show at A16 in Torrance. He is psyched on a group hike sometime the week of Feb 4.

Hey Everyone,

I just got back from Africa where I had been since Dec 30. I'll be down in So Cal doing the clinics soon. Anybody up for a group hike on Friday the 8th? Meet at Manker Flats at 6 AM. Bring your ice axe, crampons, and snow climbing stuff. Drop me an email if you want to come.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the various stores!

All the best,

Kurt

Hey, that's a flex Friday and gives me the excuse that I've been looking for to stay "up north" this weekend. Thanks.

We gonna be able to ski?

What kind of "permits" will you have on hand? I assume that was a typo and you met to say "forms on hand"?

It doesn't sound like by Feb 8 there will be enough snow to ski unless we get some more good snowfall. We'll see as the date approaches.

That copy was directly taken from an A16 listing. I had the type fixed so it reads more accurately. Sorry for the confusion.

Snow falling today and through the weekend at Baldy.
The 8th should be a great day to ski/board.

These seminars are both informative and inspirational. If you are not sure you are up to the trek, you will walk away much more informed on what is involved, confident about training and probably inspired to give it a shot. When I walked in to last year seminar, it was probably 80/20 that I was there “just to listen and probably never to give the mountain a try.” When I left a couple hours later, there was no way I would not at least attempt the main trail. We “won the lottery” (got a permit) and on August 8, I successfully reached the summit with three 40 something other rookies. Kurt’s presentation really helped. http://www.adventure16.com/wordpress1/?p=36

Yes we'll be going. It should be interesting. Bring your transceivers, shovels, and probes. There is lots of snow up there. I was there yesterday and had to park my car well below Manker Flats because it doesn't have 4 wheel drive. I rode up in another car. There's about 1-2 feet on the road at Manker.

Meet at 6 AM at Manker Flats.

Kurt -- I always love joining your group hikes but it's looking as if work will win this week. Better than no work, I suppose, given that I have a mortgage and (soon) college tuition (again). eek In case I don't make ot on Friday, I want to say hello and wish everyone well. smile

Well if you don't make it Friday we'll miss you Alan but maybe next time. Hopefully it'll be a little more sunny than it was yesterday. It was a bit stormy on Sunday. This was our view as we approached the hut. The weather got more windy an hour or so after this photo was taken.

There were a few people who managed to reach the summit but we found it a nice day to eat lunch and hang out in the hut.

Dang. I walked right past the hut around 11:30.

On the bright side, I can get Friday off, so I'll be there at 6 am, and I'm bringing my skis, too!

Right on Steve... We'll look forward to seeing you. My skis are in Bishop. Unless I get someone to bring them down I won't be on skis this time. It should be a great day for skiing though.
