Just noticed this while online for something else.
About a half hour ago, there was a 3.7 quake ~2 miles E of Lone Pine. By the map below, it looks like it could have been lightly felt on the summit, if anyone was there.

I looked it up on Weather Underground - it occurred at 7:15AM local time. I didn't feel it, but I'm 62 miles from its epicenter.

But, I didn't feel the one at Coso Jct 2 days ago either, and it was only 18 miles away. That was a 3.5 at 3:56AM local time.

You're probably aware of this, but this area is relatively active. For example, there's a geothermal plant at Coso, so small earthquakes goes with the territory. Not to infer that generating electricity from water injected into hot rock causes earthquakes; just that it's an active area from a volcanology (sp?) point of view.

Better to have lots of small ones than the rare blockbuster ...

The time of the quake is listed immediately above the shake map on the USGS site I linked.

While the whole 395 area is geologically active, most of that activity between Yosemite and Mojave is usually cenetered around two particularly active areas: Long Valley Cauldera (generally between Bishop and Mammoth), and further south around the Little Lake area (generally bewteen Coso Junction and China Lake).

For all the years I've been daily following the CA/NV USGS earthquake map, I've rarely seen one right at, or in the immediate vicinity of Lone Pine. So when one happens there, even though this one was only a 3.7, it jumped right out at me on the map.

I felt it this morning in Sequoia. It was a single sharp jolt, like someone slammed a big door hard.

There have been a few aftershocks, according to the USGS map and linked earthquake lists at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/Maps/US2/36.38.-119.-117.php

Not to encourage the Metropolitan Water District, I notice the mainshock was centered over the very recently rewetted Owens River channel. I hope the aftershock sequence (which seems normal for 3.7), stays that way. It could be unfortunate if the position and timing are not merely a coincidence or artifact of the location uncertainty.

Department of Water and Power (DWP) maintains the water system in Owens Valley, not MWD.

Thanks for the correction. I thought it was LA, but the other was the one I ran across looking for the official moniker.
