Can anyone recommend a cheap motel or similar lodging at high altitude near Mt. Whitney? I'm thinking of staying at such a place for a few days to acclimate before summiting.

I know of lodging at the 8,000' base of Mammoth ski area. Any other suggestions?

Hi It looks like you are close to Tahoe I would drive up after work and sleep around the local mountains for several weeks , When I was working I spent many nights in the mountains to get away from the city , and used the cold as the alarm clock! Thanks Doug

Paul, it's called the "hit the trail hotel" you get to it by taking the road up to, or as close as you can get to the portal. Park, hike up a ways and camp. Get up the next day and hike a little more. Enjoy the views and the relative solitude. No room service, but then again, no TV blaring til three in the morning.

Personally, the best way to acclimate––or re-acclimate––is to hit the Dow Villa when you get down to Lone Pine and get yourself in the hot tub.

Yeah, there really aren't a lot of options other than getting up into the mountains and just taking your time should acclimating be an issue for you.

I think you might find that now, with all the snow coverage and the slower pace you might come into––you'll work right into being acclimatized, whereas, if it was the middle of summer and you just blasted up the trail and into thin air––you'd be hurting before you know it.

Last summer I got a ride from the Portal from a very fit looking guy, who told me his mistake was that he just went up as fast as he could and for all reasons, ended up turning around just past trail camp. tortoise and the hare . . . just get there.

Several options are discussed in Develop your acclimation plan. I assume that you are looking for minimum cost ideas, so acclimatizing without camping is out.

The Tioga Resort, June Lake and Mammoth Lakes from the north in about that order.

Personally, I like June. It is less expensive and depending on where you stay most everything is within walking distance.

Rock Creek Lodge at 9,373 is about as high as you can get in lodging in the Sierra's. It also seems like a great experience. It's about halfway between Bishop and Mammoth. There is no road access in winter so they bring you in by snowmobile. Great place for snowshoeing or CC skiing.

You can spend a night at Toms place first which is around 7k altitude. I think they are pretty reasonable in price. Toms is on the way to RockCreek.
