Coincidentally, the last successful application was for someone requesting a single permit, and he got the last available opening for his last choice.

I didn't know it worked that way. I figured they just pulled the requests and processed them as they were pulled. Is this a new way of doing it? I still have not been charged or got a letter.

Steve,
How are you so intimately familiar with the Inyo Nat'l Forest Service's numbers on how many permits have been issued? I know you are not a ranger, but rather, a computer geek who lives in Fresno!

As I said earlier, they are more concerned about categorizing the last application than notifying the first selectee. That minimizes the total processing time. Sure it takes a little longer for the first selectee, but it means that everybody gets serviced by April. Having done mass production before, I can tell you that things go a lot faster when you do not have to take the time to think about what you are doing.

That means there are 26,235 permits available for the 2008 season.

This figure does not include the 25/day available for trip originating at other Inyo Trailhead or trips starting in the national parks.

Regarding: "They have just finished the first phase processing all of the 5490 applications. 3,525 reservations were successful." and "That means there are 26,235 permits available for the 2008 season."

Some of those applications were for more than one person unless you happen to know that they actually are counting the total numbers.

All the totals sounds about right. About 10,000 hikers hit the MMWT a year with intentions of summiting.

What Steve's post indicates, if you really want to stand on Mt. Whitney this, or any other quota season, you can. Those with more skills, gear and clothing have more options.

You were the only one to get charged? Looks like no one got charged for permits yet, and you were just the lucky guy who paid for lunch for a couple of rangers on the 14th.

Got a hit yesterday on my card! Now I'm just waiting to see which date they gave me...I submitted 12 different dates for my 3-day trip.

I knew it was a bad idea to send a check instead of a credit card, this waiting around is intense!

I'm waiting on a group of 6 for about 7 different entry dates in July....somewhat of a longshot I'm guessing.

Also trying to get a permit to "The Wave" in Arizona for the same group, which is 5 times more difficult to get cool

Permits for Mount St. Helens Sept. 13 smile Y'all knock yourselves out there on the big hill this summer, I'm going a little different activity, thinking latitude not altitude this time.

Geez I'm so full of myself.

I sent a debit card number and haven't seen a hit on my online banking page yet. I'm unfamiliar with some of life's simpler matters... Does paying with a debit card (that CAN be run as credit) slow the process?

I'm wanting a day hike in the middle of the week... I'm very anxious since I haven't heard anything yet.
