I just called the CC company and both my permits went through!!!Have no idea what dates becuase when I send in applications I put about 50 dates on each one, that way your guarenteed a permit. I've never been sent an "I'm sorry letter". But then your at the systems' mercy for what date you go.

Steve,
Do you know what day/date they're going to put the remaining available permits on the "Mt. Whitney Trail Reservation Availability" board?
Thanks,

Jeff S. You're sort of right. If you put in 50 different dates for a Day Hike permit that is. However, I and others, have used the tried and true "Massive block o' time" method - "ANY 3 day 2 night trip between June 1st and August 31st" and been denied. True, it's only happened to me once but it does happen when you're trying to get 3 days on the mountain.

Steve,
Do you know what day or date the U.S. Forest Service is going to post the remaining permits on the"Mt. Whitney Trail Reservation Availability" board? Any information would be great.
Thanks,
Greg Lukenbil

I received notification today! Too bad it was to let me know all of my requested dates were filled. So instead of giving up, I think I will take an alternate route. Can anyone recommend any alternate routes (ie. through seqouia) that will be easier to get a permit for? Thanks in advance.

I actually took the 5 minutes to call my credit card company this morning to see if it got charged... no dice. Then the permit came in the mail today. I'd forgotten that I'd written a check!

When I applied I noticed that there was no way to specify a North Fork day hike. So I wrote it in. But my permit notification just says "Main Mt. Whitney Trail", so I guess that means they don't care which way we go. What's the ratio of MMWT to NF day hikers, 20:1? I'll bet they'd start making the distinction if a more sizable fraction of the 100 per day went up the North Fork.

Received a rejection letter today - i had given nine alternate date through the end of September. This would explain why my cc didn't get hit!

To clarify that statement, a 3-day trip (or a 14-day trip) requires an overnight permit. The demand is much greater for overnight permits than day-hike permits.

Have you checked the links in Wilderness Permit Options? There are also several recent posts on this message board about the High Sierra Trail (HST), the John Muir Trail (JMT), Kearsarge Pass, and Shepherd Pass. There are also several routes out of Horseshoe Meadow.

Hi Guys, I just got my confirmation letter yesterday 3/27/2008. I sent a check in on the Feb.1. I got either my first or second choice (7/20/2008) out of eleven dates I sent. The permit is for 6 for a one day summit. Now the real work begins! Good luck and see you at the top!

Got my permit yesterday. Our request was for a dayhike for two on Monday July 7.

Our plan is to camp at Horseshoe the Friday before, dayhike Cirque that Saturday, and stay in Lone Pine Saturday night. Then drive to the Portal Sunday and maybe hike to Lone Pine Lake. Leave at 3:00 am Monday morning and bag Muir on the way.

My gf has acclimation problems sometime and that is our main concern. All we need is a little luck with the weather.

Received my permit notification in the mail yesterday and received October 10 - 12 for my 3-day trip. Not the best, due to cold and possible snow, but I'm ready to go! Now I'll have a reason to put my skills to use for once! haha

Hope to see everyone up top and good luck!

Looks like my first 14er will be Mt. Sneffels in CO instead crazy
