I'm a definite. I'll be coming from H.B. Would it be possible to meet any of you and head to Manker Flats together (of course depending on where you live)?

Alan, I'll send you a pm with my parents phone number in H.B. I'll be there late Thurs. night.

Is there still snow on the trail? The way the weather has been, I would expect it to be pretty much gone. I am thinking of joining you guys, if you don't mind a newbie. I have done distance hikes, but never any summits. Let me know. Thanks.

I was up Baldy on Friday, March 21. I posted a trip report here. There was plenty of snow above the Ski Hut. That snow has been thinning daily, but we are supposed to get some precipitation in the middle of this week.

You can always start the hike and turn around if it is not to your liking.

The plan is to meet at the Manker Flat trail head at 7 AM this Saturday.

No permit is required for the hike. A Forest Adventure Pass is required to park. They are available in many places (Sport Chalet, REI, ranger stations, and quite a few other businesses), but may be hard to come by at 7 AM on a Saturday. If you don't have one and get a ticket, you can buy one after the fact tat the ranger Station in Baldy Village.

We went up Sunday, 3-30. Started snowing in Baldy Village. It was 31 degrees at Manker Flats trailhead at 10:00 AM. It was snowy and windy all the way up to the ski hut. Nobody that passed us coming down made it to the summit due to the snow, fog, clouds, etc. Excellent flow at the creek coming from the spring above the hut. Hut was open with great hot tea and cocoa. It is supposed to be open next weekend also.

Good hiking,
Jim

I went up Baldy via the Ski hut trail on Sunday evening. Only a few patches of snow below the hut and mostly snow above the hut. The snow above the hut is very consolidated and crampons/axe were needed in a few places.

If my plans for Saturday fall through, I'll be at Manker Flats at 7am.

It will be cool if you can make it, I'm going with Doogie and you next weekend to Jepson. I think i met you about a month ago. My friend and I hiked up to the base of San Gorgonio and ran in to you and Doogie at the Meadows. If I don't see you this Saturday I'll see you next Friday. Later....

I'll second Jeff's motion. I secretly hope your plans change for Sat.!

Can I assume that snowshoes are not necessary (trying to keep my luggage light on the flight down and back).

I'll tell you what -- I promise to leave my snowshoes home.

We are supposed to get some precipitation tomorrow and Thursday.

I agree with Alan.....the snowshoes can stay home. Even with snow in the forecast, I doubt it will be enough to justify bringing them.

Jeff- Yes, that was me with doogie. Next weekend should be fun!
