Kurt Wedberg, founder/owner of SMI and frequent poster here, will be leaving for Everest tomorrow March 23. He will be guiding the southern side of the mountain.... assuming the Nepalese don't cave from Chinese pressure mad

Dispatches from International Mountain Guides will be here:

http://www.mountainguides.com/everest-south08.shtml

His client's blog will also be updated here:

http://andrewsoneverest.blogspot.com

Please pray for the safety of Kurt, his client, their Sherpas, and everyone else on the mountain. (And please pray that Kurt doesn't fire me for posting this smile )

Good luck Kurt. i just got back from taking a 5 day course with SMI that Kurt ran on mountaineering skills in the Whitney area. great course and although the weather took a turn for the worse on our summitt attempt it was well worth it and i would do it again in a heart beat. Not only did i learn a boatload but the food was great too. our other 2 guides, Tim and Sara both were outstanding, i felt bad for Tim having to answer all my stupid questions standing outside saturday while the snow storm was howling, thanks again, god speed to Kurt and his team, rr

Wishing Kurt and his team success and a safe expedition. With all the politics this year, it will be challenging. Not only is it a sad situation for the sherpas, local people and climbers who had planned for the north side but there are concerns for too many climbers on the south side not acclimatizing properly and also attempting the summit at once. Let's hope for a safe season!

But, it was fun standing out in that snow storm with you smile Too bad you couldn't have stayed longer at the Owens River Gorge. We had a blast that day. Cheers.

Greetings from the Bangkok airport. We're on our way!

Look for a few SMI guides running around the Sierra this spring. They'll be up on Mt. Whitney a few times, teaching snow travel courses, backcountry skiing, and rock climbing around the Sierra east side crags. A special thanks goes to Deb, two Chris's, Sara, Tim, George, Bernd, and Michelle for holding down the fort while I'm gone!

I wish you all a wonderful spring. Be safe and enjoy our beloved Sierra.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and well wishes and I look forward to catching up with you all in June.

All the best,

Kurt

Kurt,

thanks for blazing the trail. I'll be checking your posts and be in Nepal and then hopefully Tibet, in May. Won't be in the Everest region––heading up to Mt. Kailash, but very curious to know how our reception––as Americans––will be once we get to and into Tibet. News doesn't look good.

Climb on.

A *bump* and following the web-excerpts has been fun. I check in each day to see what's happening over there.

In a somewhat related note, I read in Outside magazine this month that on May 13th on PBS's Frontline, there will be a premiere of a 2-hour film called Storm Over Everest by David Breashears (should have fantastic scenery and filming). It is another recounting of the 1996 Everest disaster...with footage from 2007 on Everest and some "scenes re-created at Snowbird, Utah".

Wonder if it will be broadcast in HD?

Continued good luck Kurt & Mike..!

Anyone hear news from the climbers out there? Haven't seen a web update since the last of April. The update alludes to the fact that the mountain might be "shut down" for a bit while the Chinese do their Olympic Torch thing. Must be frustrating if the weather is good to be stuck in camp waiting for permission to move...

Best of luck to them...hope to hear some news soon..

In the Inyo Register last weekend was a report that Kurt's client was unable to continue and Kurt escorted him out. Kurt reportly was headed back to the mountain to try heading up himself.

I got a call from him on Friday night (May 2). Unfortunately I was on an airplane so my phone was off. He left me voice message saying all was good, He was leaving for Camp 2 and the Sherpas were working on building Camp 3. The Chinese were waiting for a storm to pass and then push for the summit. THEN, he (Kurt) and his group would give it a go. Anticipating a mid May summit attempt. He sounded pretty optimistic.
