Hi,

I'm deciding roughly where I'll be camping along a JMT thru-hike and for 3 of the nights I'm deciding between a couple areas, usually within 3 miles or so of each other. I'd appreciate recommendations for which of the spots is more scenic:

Purple Lake, Marie Lake, or Sallie Keyes Lakes?

Lake Marjorie or Bench Lake? Bench Lake is on a 2 mile spur trail off the JMT. Is it worth the detour?

Stop at Arrowhead Lake or go 3 more miles to the Rae Lakes?

Thanks a lot!

I'm making similar plans for my July trip. Based on distances and perceived aesthetics, I tentatively have pegged Marie Lake and Arrowhead Lake for campsites. Of course, this easily could change on whim while on the trail.

I did Purple lake last year. It is pretty heavily boxed in compared to the wide open spaces of most of the alpine lakes. I loved it. The colors at sunset were amazing. Nearby Virginia lake is more open if that is your thing, but open lakes are everywhere on the JMT. I mainly stayed there for a short day (nobo) into Reds Meadow so I could have a double cheeseburger for lunch. I'm glad it worked out.

Marie Lakes was my favorite lake(s) though. When you top out on Silver pass all you see is a world of blue alpine lakes. I think I'll stay there this year. It has a lot of coves and shorelines, so you can probably avoid the inevitible crowds. I didn't care fo Sallie Keyes compared to all the rest.

I stayed at Marjorie and it was another one of my favorites. I still probably go to Bench lake this year for the solitude.

Rae is beautiful, but I'll probably check out 60 lake basin nearby this summer. I'll stay at Arrowhead before I stay at Rae this summer...

In the end, you really can't go wrong. Just make sure that at least once you pick a lake slightly off trail (it doesn't need a name) and camp by it. You can find plenty at the bases of the passes.

As for the HST, 9 lakes basin would be a good place to stop. Hamilton lakes is also beautiful. I'd stay at 9 lakes basin, then wander down to Hamilton for lunch the next day, pass Bearpaw, and camp at the little known Buck Canyon crossing for your last night.

Thanks, Jeff. I'll probably stop at Purple Lk. for a while and then go to Virginia because I like more open scenery.

Great HST suggestions, thanks! Are there any good places along the Kern Canyon? I think I'll stop somewhere there my first night. After leaving Whitney, I don't see any lakes for quite a stretch on the map.

Thanks - I'll stop at Marie Lakes too and then either Arrowhead or a little further on to Rae Lakes, depending how I feel.

Have a great trip!

I forgot you were going south. In that case you are correct, visit Purple Lake and then head on to Virginia. I cooked dinner at Virginia as the sun was setting and was over to Purple when the colors were still good. It's a short distance, but uphill for you.

You could stay at the north end when you first get into the bottom of the Kern Canyon. I think it's called upper junction meadow or something like that. Early the next morning you'll have two of the hardest crossings over Lower Wallace and Whitney creek, but they will be low when you go by. You may have better odds of encountering a bear here though.

About halfway down the canyon there is also the hot springs, which is the only other really easy place to camp. I stayed there and got to soak in it after dinner and in the morning. From there it is a hot dusty climb out and into the hot, dusty, and probably burned area on the other side. I'd try to make it all the way to Moraine Lake or further before camping once you leave the Kern.

Thanks, Jeff! I will do the hot springs. I saw your post on the other string about the PCT. Best of luck to you!

Purple Lake is before Virginia Lake for people heading North to South on the JMT followed by the long dusty slog down into Tulley's Hole.

From Purple over to Virginia is a short uphill followed by an easy downhill into the Virginia Lake basin. My recollection is there are better, more abundant camp sites at Virginia Lake. I'm not sure but I think Purple Lake has some camping restrictions.

Thanks, I'm planning to stop at Purple Lk. for a while and then go to Virginia Lk. for overnite.
