I'm taking my nine-year-old son up Whitney in late June. We hiked up to a spot just below Trail Camp last year so he could see the area and get excited about going to the top this year. To get him well acclimatized, I want to spend two nights at around 10,000 feet elevation before the hike. We'll be on the Whitney trail for four nights, so I plan to use an RV for our acclimatization period. Are RV's permited at Horseshoe Meadows? With the one-night rule there, where should we spend the other night? Also, is it easy to find a place to park a 24" RV at the portal?
Any advice is appreciated.

Rock Creek Lake is 9600 feet with plenty of dayhike opportunities from 10,000 feet and up. I don't know if sites are good for RV's, but yours is fairly short. Call Inyo NF.

I don't think Onion Valley has any sites that would be close to level.

Tuolumne Meadows is 8600 with lots to do and many dayhike opportunities.

Horseshoe Meadows has a 1 night camping limit, but not a limit on parking. If your camper is self-contained, I can't see much harm in sleeping inside. But Rock Creek is a pretty place, too -- might be a nicer place to spend the time.

I don't really think you should have ANY problem finding a parking spot for a 24" RV. I am just wondering how you FIT into it!! grin

It sounds like the best plan is to go to Horseshoe Meadows and spend both nights in the RV there. Some fun day hikes will get us ready for the Whitney trail. Thanks for all the input.
