I did a search on stove fuel, but didn't find the answer I was looking for. I have an MSR Pocket Rocket, and know I can't carry a fuel canister on the airplane. Does the Whitney Portal Store have MSR fuel canisters? I would prefer to buy what I can there, but if they don't have it, can I buy MSR fuel canisters in Lone Pine?

These posts don't really tell me if anyone has MSR canisters. At least they have phone numbers, so I can call and check. Thanks for the help.

Hi We stock most fuel cans but we know from years here that even the most common stoves have quirks. every so often we get" " and the fuel can that once was made is not on the market, Hank Roberts for example and some Primus Euro multi fuel STOVES have a kink at times and the MSR fuel bottle, mouth is flat on top and others are rounded so when used as a fuel container they spray under pressure. We stock primus, coleman and all GAZ cans except the ones that are not on the market any more, you should check your stove and ask for a certain fuel can. Thanks Doug

Hi, Doug. The exact fuel I need is MSR IsoPro. It comes in a short, pressurized red canister that cannot be re-used. The canister comes with pressurized fuel in it, and only comes in 8 ounce and 4 ounce sizes. My stove just screws on the top, and does not need a pump because the cannister is already pressurized. It cannot be carried on an airplane, so I will need to find a source in Lone Pine. Sorry to be so particular, but don't want to get to Trail Camp just to figure out Brand X doesn't work.

Doc, what airport is your destination?
If you're flying into Reno, there is an REI nearby that carries MSR canisters.
I'm not certain about the L.A. area if you're flying into LAX or John Wayne but there are 7 REI stores in/around L.A., so a couple of phone calls ought to tell you which are near your route out of L.A. and up to Lone Pine.
Ditto, SFO. 9 REI stores in/around San Francisco, including Palo Alto and Fremont as well as Berkeley.

Hi Gaz cans are the puncture type and in the old days they had a 206 and a 406 size that would allow for the two small cans to be in the holding bracket so if one leaked you had a spare to leak, I don't think MSR copied the system, your can should be removeable and that is the only way to pack that type of stove and when you remove the can, wet the tip to see if the internal seal closed. The pocet rocket is simlar to a German stove used about 40 years by most climbers, they cost about 5 dollars and had three wires that fit into the burner ring and back then we used a very hot fuel that you can still find it is used to apply ski wax.
Some pratice is needed with this type of stove , the large Primus can has a larger base making the system stable, avoid using tall pots or large diameter pans you will not heat as fast, they work very well a cup at a time.
This type of stove should be an item on the 10 basic list very light, very fast and with searching one can find a small pot that carries the stove and fuel and 40 years later your son can mix tile grout in the pot. Thanks Doug

DocDiamond - the Primus and Coleman canisters that Doug sells should work fine with your stove, I use all kinds of canisters with my canister stoves (MSR Windpro and Primus Classic Trail), and I have friends who use a multitude of other brands and designs of stoves with a variety of canisters. As long as they all have the Lindahl valve design, they should be fine. You can confirm this by testing your stove with Coleman and Primus canisters at home before you leave.
The one I use the most is the Brunton canister - it is the exact same canister, with the same fuel mix, as the MSR Isopro (it comes from the same factory in Korea) but costs over a dollar less.

Thanks for all of the info from everyone. I am flying into Ontario (ONT) late on a Sunday, so picking up a fuel canister there is not a very good bet. I called around Lone Pine earlier today, and found that Lone Pine Sporting Goods has MSR IsoPro fuel canisters in both 4 ounce and 8 ounce sizes. But it is good to know that other fuel brands work just as well. FYI, Elevations carries JetBoil and some other brands, and the True Value Store has Primus.

Nah, Doug, it's the lead that's IN the red paint that makes it cost more...

For anyone flying into John Wayne (Orange County), there's an REI about two miles north of the airport off the 55 freeway. There's also an Adventure-16 (similar, slightly higher-end store), a few miles west of the airport. If you like Sports Chalet, there's one of those about 1 mile east of the airport off Michaelson. Take your pick. For the REI, take McFadden exit off the 55 north. It's on the other (west) side of the freeway, so you'll make a big box by making three left turns after the exit ramp to go north, then west, then south. Maps: REI, Santa Ana Adventure 16, Costa Mesa Sports Chalet, Irvine No guarantees as to what fuel cannisters any of the above may carry. BTW, if you decide to visit A-16, there's another Sports Chalet just up the street from that (but the one above is closest to the airport).

I have used both the MSR and Primus fuel cans for my Pocketrocket last year on the JMT with no issues. I know someone else already said this but just wanted to second that.
I also plan on using the Pockerocket in a couple weeks on Whitney - trying to cut some weight off the pack. My Whisperlite has decided it needs to retire.
