I consented to take some scouts up to Lone Pine to learn some compass and map skills and practice some hiking at a higher elevation then sea level.

We spent some time in the Alabama Hills and then hiked up to Lone Pine Lake this morning.

Some pictures are here http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2826706660061435028iiIGxw

It was some of the most scenic stuff I have seen up there in a long time...way different then the dry hot dirt we experienced below Lone Pine Lake two weeks ago. The new fresh snow was beautiful covering up the trees. Probably about 6 inches of snow at Lone Pine Lake........sure didn't feel like Memorial day.

A climber returning down the Mt. Whitney trail said there were reports of new snow waist to chest deep up near the top of Mt. Whitney & and on the higher portions of the trail.

Nice pictures. You plan a trip weeks or months in advance and you never know what you are going to get when you get there. Based on your last set of pictures on Thor Peak, I doubt you were expecting that just snowed look. Must have been very nice to time it just right.

GREAT pics.

Next time, I need to stop at Alabama Rocks. You know how it is...on the way to the "good stuff", sometimes you pass by the "good stuff".
