Hi,

My name is Kristen. I applied for, and received, four permits to summit Mt. Whitney, via Main Trail, from 7-11-08 to 7-13-08. Some of my friends bailed out and/or have to leave the country for familial obligations. Now I have three spaces available.

Last year I successfully summited Whitney, for the first time, in mid-July. After that experience I decided a three-day trip would be better than two.

Despite my age (25), I consider myself a medium to slow paced hiker. It's like, I either sprint fast, or walk slow. I'm looking for someone who hikes at an even, moderate pace. I'd also prefer to go with someone whose already summited Whitney. Would be nice if you weren't 10+ years older than me. Kind of looking for some generational rapport.

Anyway, e-mail me at krisk82@yahoo.com or respond to this post and let me know if you're interested and we'll take it from there. If I don't get any replies by June 13th or 15th, I'm going to call the Visitor's Center to release the remaining permits.

Thanks,

Kristen

What were you thinking as far as leaving LA? Are you going up Thurs. since Fri. is the 11th? I am in Palmdale and interested.

I have July 9th and 10th off from work.

I plan on driving to Lone Pine on the 9th. I plan to do some local hiking on that same day and 10th (main trail to outpost at the most). That's what I did last time.

Basically my plan for the time on the mountain is:

7/11 Hike to Trail Camp, sleep overnight.
7/12 Hike to Summit, then hike back down to Outpost Camp and sleep overnight.
7/13 Hike to trail head.

Last year, on the second day, I hiked from the summit to the trailhead (with the obvious stop to trail camp to takedown the camp). That was too long and not very enjoyable.

Ok, so this Sat. the 14th I am planning a day hike up the Mountaineers route...this will be my first ascent of Whitney. That being said, I am going with no winter gear (except clothing) so if weather or leftover snow get in the way we are turning around....Upper Boyscout will be fine w me, Iceberg even better. Will be climbing with someone who wants to take it a bit easy and thats cool with me, since the point really is getting familiar, not over doing it. I say this to let you know I have not climbed Whitney b-4. Sat. will be the first try. I am interested in the 11th -13th and I also extend the invitation to you for a day hike this Sat. Maybe just to meet...not sure, but the offer is there. You can email dwightheim@att.net with your thoughts or I'll check these posts. Anyway, looks like if all is cool, I will ask for the time off work, lemme know.

Kristen,

I am very interested. I have a campsite reserved at the Portal campground for the 11th through the 14th, but could not get any permits. Perhaps we could leave our extra gear at the campsite while we are on the trail.

I was planning on getting there on Friday and trying my luck at getting an unused permit for either an overnite or day pass. Was hoping to get familiar with the mountaineers route, but that could wait.

I have done the main trail as a dayhike for the last two years and have a permit for August 3rd to go with four friends. I hike at whatever pace is comfortable for the group I am with.

I am 41 and in good shape. Let me know if there is still room.

I have a three day weekend this weekend, so I have the time to go up to the area. I'm actually getting sick of hiking Baldy here, and am looking for a change of pace. Since I'm in the LA area, I need to check accomodations, gas, etc before I can commit to a hike up in the Whitney Area this weekend.

I am not sure if I made it clear in the initial post: I was able to get permits to summit via Main Trail. I have only summited once on said trail. I haven't even tried to hike, much less familiarize myself with, the mountaineers trailhead and route. Are you going with someone that has experience on the route? If I were you I'd bring some raingear, warm clothes, and other stuff in case anything bad happens. I believe monsoon season is beginning here in the southwest.

Will write your e-mail.

I'm actually booked to hike via Main Trail, not Mountaineers route.
