What do you think the chances of getting a permit for Mt. Whitney are during the week. I was thinking about just showing up in the morning on Thursday to see if I can get a walk in permit, but I want to have some reasonable chance of getting one.

You're almost sure of getting one.   But you didn't say:  day hike or overnight?

The best day is usually Wednesday. The worst day is usually Saturday.
